Self-Portraits with Amrita is a contemporary work based in Kathak, the classical dance of north India. The movement is inspired by the paintings of Indo-Hungarian painter, Amrita Sher-Gil, who lived in India, Budapest and Paris between 1913-1941. Our bodies are a storehouse of cultural memory. The dance unearths the stories of women in rural India and the way they inhabit their clothing and their bodies while reaching beyond to seek self-expression.
